Apple introduced the next generation of its popular operating system in a telephone news conference in Cupertino headquarters today. iPhone OS 4.0 will be available this summer and major improvements to the mobile platform from Apple, including multitasking, integrated advertising and improved email functionality.

In his presentation, Steve Jobs has presented seven tent poles, “or large sets of features that will radically change the way you use the iPhone and how applications are developed for the device. Multitasking is a reality and business enterprises will be able to manage and secure their networks on iPhones. The mail application will be much more robust and VoIP applications like Skype will be able to run in the background. Jobs also announced that Apple is also expanding trade with iPhone OS 4.0 by grouping the iBooks, a platform for social game and a mobile advertising platform.

iPhone OS 4.0 will be available for the iPod Touch and iPhone users this summer, while IPAD owners wait until the fall to update the new operating system. Multitasking and several other features require the iPhone 3G or third generation iPod Touch. Previous models did not have enough power to handle all functions.
